Championship Bailey did not have such a successful season with the bat. Although he played eight more innings than he had in 1957 he scored 355 fewer runs and his average fell to 22.39. He did not make a century, his highest score being 90 against Somerset at Ilford, a match in which he also took 5-49 in the Somerset first innings. His bowling was as good as ever as he took 102 Championship wickets including figures of 8-29 against Derbyshire at Westcliff-on-Sea and 7-19 against Surrey at Leyton.
