With May, Graveney, Cowdrey and Peter Richardson all scoring two centuries in the series there was no need for any of the Bailey “rescue acts” and he in fact only scored 5 runs in four innings. His bowling substantially won the Second Test at Lord’s where he took 7-44 in West Indies first innings and 4-54 in the second dismissing Clyde Walcott and Everton Weekes in both knocks. He also took nine wickets against the tourists for Essex at Ilford, dismissing Weekes twice in this match as well. England won a surprisingly one-sided series 3-0. In the Championship Bailey again topped the Essex batting and bowling averages scoring 1094 runs at an average of 49.72 and taking 70 wickets at the remarkably low cost of 14.57. He made 102 against Glamorgan at Ilford and 132 against Worcestershire at Leyton but his most remarkable performance came in the match with Hampshire at Romford where he scored 59 and 71 not out and took fourteen wickets at a cost of 81 runs. On five other occasions he took five wickets or more in an innings. Overall he achieved his fourth Double scoring 1322 runs at an average of 38.88 and taking 104 wickets at 17.02. He finished in twelfth place in tha national batting averages and in thirteenth place in the bowling. It was another outstanding season from England’s premier all-rounder.
