They played another close series against the host nation which ended in a 2-2 draw with the Third Test drawn. Bailey was pressed into service as an opening batsman on this tour. Colin Cowdrey had opened against Australia in 1956 but had not enjoyed the experience and no other openers had appeared since Len Hutton’s retirement in 1955. Bailey shared with Peter Richardson in Test opening partnerships of 28, 11, 76, 74, 115, 45, 25, 10, 1 and 15. He scored 259 runs at an average of 25.90 with a top score of 80 and finished in fourth place in the England batting averages. As a bowler he headed the Test averages with 19 wickets at 12.21 including a match winning 5-20 in 15.4 overs in the First Test. In the provincial matches Bailey scored two centuries, against Border and Rhodesia, and took ten more wickets. In a number of easy 42
