finally winning the deciding Test at Kennington Oval to take the Series by a 3-2 margin. Bailey played in all five Tests scoring 184 runs at an average of 23 and taking nine wickets at 36.44. He scored runs, as usual at vital times, notably at Old Trafford in the Third Test when he helped Denis Compton to add 164 for the fifth wicket after England had collapsed to 75-4, and scored 38 not out in the second innings an effort that nearly saved England from eventual defeat. He also made 49 in the opening Test at Trent Bridge. His best bowling came at Headingley in the Fourth Test where he took 3-97 in 40.5 overs as South Africa made 500 in their second innings. Earlier in the season he had made a century for Essex against the tourists adding 184 for the fifth wicket with Doug Insole. In the Championship Bailey score 878 runs at an average of 41.80 and took 63 wickets at 20.85. These figures put him at the top of the bowling averages and into second place behind Insole in the batting. He made 152 not out against Kent at Clacton-on-Sea, a match in which he also took seven wickets. He had another good all-round match against Nottinghamshire at Southend-on-Sea with scores of 54 and 114 not out and five wickets for 68 in Nottinghamshire’s first innings.
