Famous Cricketers No 58 - Trevor Bailey

1954/55 - M.C.C. in Australia and New Zealand England won the Test Series in both Australia and New Zealand in the winter of 1954/55. The series in Australia was a triumph for some of the younger members of the side - Peter May and Colin Cowdrey among the batsmen and Frank Tyson and Brian Statham among the bowlers. Bailey played a vital supporting role scoring 296 in the Test Matches at an average of 37.00 and taking ten wickets at an average of 30.60. The series started badly at Brisbane where England were beaten by an innings and 154 runs, going into the match with four fast bowlers and no spinners. This was a policy that worked triumphantly for the West Indies from 1976 onwards but proved disastrous on this occasion. In a poor England first innings Bailey scored 88 out of a total of 190 in the course of which he won £100 which had been offered to the first batsman to hit a six in the match. Opening the batting with Len Hutton in the Second Test at Sydney, he failed with 0 and 6 but he played his part in the England win by taking four wickets for 59 runs including the top three in the Australian order. At Melbourne in the Third Test he reverted to number 6 scoring 30 and 24 not out. The second innings occupied nearly three hours but he stayed whilst others laid about them and helped add 106 runs with the England lower order. At Adelaide, in the Fourth Test he took 3-39 in an Australian innings of 323, including the vital wicket of Neil Harvey. He scored 38 and 15, helping Denis Compton to settle the second innings after England had lost four wickets for 49 runs chasing 94 to win. In the final Test at Sydney he scored 72 adding 134 with Compton for the fifth wicket. England won the two Tests in New Zealand easily bowling the home side out for 26 in the second innings of the Auckland Test. Own Team O M R W Opp Ct Total Total 263.
