Famous Cricketers No 58 - Trevor Bailey

1954 In 1954 Pakistan were the touring team and Bailey played against them in the first three Test Matches. He was not required to bowl much, only 12 overs in all, to take one wicket for 32 runs. As a batsman he had three innings opening the innings with David Sheppard in the Third Test at Old Trafford and scoring 42. At Trent Bridge in the Second Test he helped Denis Compton, in his very best form, to add 192 for the sixth wicket. Bailey’s share of the partnership was 27. He was left out of the Fourth Test, which England lost, as the selectors experimented with the winter tour of Australia in mind. In the Championship Bailey scored 1046 runs at an average of 34.86 to finish second in the Essex batting averages and took 71 wickets at 22.83 to head the bowling averages. He scored a century against Somerset at Weston-super-Mare and took five wickets in an innings on three occasions. He had a good all round match against the Canadians at Clacton-on-Sea, scoring 50 and taking seven wickets for 63 runs. Overall he completed the double with 1344 runs at an average of 32.78 and taking 101 wickets at 21.39. He was an automatic choice for the winter tour of Australia and New Zealand.
