Other than that he had a successful season performing the double by scoring 1513 runs at an average of 36.90 and taking 103 wickets at 29.09. His 71 Championship wickets for Essex were rather more expensive than normal costing 31.01 runs each. This may have had something to do with the excellent batting wickets prepared for Essex home games. Their leading bowler, Ray Smith, finished 76th in the first-class averages and had the highest average of any leading bowler amongst the seventeen Counties. Bailey finished fourth in the Essex bowling averages and third in the batting, scoring a century (155 not out) against Kent at Tunbridge Wells. He took part in an exciting game against Lancashire at Brentwood. When the last over started Essex needed nine to win with their last pair together. Bailey hit the first ball for six and the second for two, played the third and was caught off the fourth as the match ended in a tie. He took nine wickets against Hampshire at Southampton and seven against Warwickshire at Southend-on-Sea. By the end of the season he had made 7,810 first-class runs and taken 628 wickets. He was ready for the battle for The Ashes with Australia in 1953. Own Team O M R W Opp Ct Total Total 162.
