He was below his best as a bowler conceding 168 runs in the Tests he played, at Trent Bridge and Headingley, without taking a wicket. At Headingley he proved his value as a batsman by scoring 95, 48 of them coming in the course of a last-wicket stand with Malcolm Hilton. In the Championship Bailey took 78 wickets at an average of 17.43. Somerset cannot have enjoyed playing against him as he took nine of their wickets at Brentwood and a further seven in the return match at Bath. He also took 6-44 against Derbyshire at Romford. He finished fourth in the batting averages for Essex with 791 runs at an average of 31.64. He made one century, against Surrey at Southend-on-Sea and made valuable half-centuries against Derbyshire, Kent, Lancashire and Northamptonshire. Own Team O M R W Opp Ct Total Total 131.
