He had some niggling injuries which caused him to miss some County games and he also missed selection for the Test matches at Lord’s and Trent Bridge against the West Indies. Nevertheless he still scored 1041 runs at an average of 27.39 and took 88 wickets at an average of 20.93. In the Test matches in which he took part, he scored 82 not out in the first innings of the First Test at Old Trafford, rescuing England from the depths of 88-5 in a partnership of 161 with Godfrey Evans. On a spinners’ wicket he bowled only thirteen overs in which he captured the wicket of Everton Weekes. He scored 33 in England’s second innings. In the final Test at Kennington Oval he took 2-84 in a West Indian innings of 503 and scored 18 and 12 with the bat. It was enough to gain him selection for the MCC tour of Australia and New Zealand in the winter of 1950/51. In the Championship Bailey scored 771 runs at an average of 28.55, finishing fourth in the Essex batting averages. He scored eight half centuries including one in each innings at Worcester. As a bowler he topped the averages with 56 wickets at 20.41. Included in these figures was a spell of seven wickets for no runs against Glamorgan at Brentwood and an 8-70 against Kent at Clacton-on-Sea which set up a ten-wicket win for his side. It was a dismal season for Essex who finished in bottom place in the County Championship. In an exciting Gentlemen v Players match at Lord’s, Bailey scored 5 in his only innings but took 5-124 in a match in which the Players finished 10 runs short of victory with their final pair together.
