Famous Cricketers No 58 - Trevor Bailey
Wisden states that for a long while he overshadowed Compton and showed complete confidence. In the third Test, at Old Trafford, he excelled with bat and ball, taking 6-84 and scoring 72 not out. In the final Test at Kennington Oval he scored 36 and took three wickets for 139. It was a memorable Test series for him. In the Championship, Bailey took five wickets in an innings on six occasions and, although scoring centuries, he made a number of valuable 50’s, none better than the 88 not out he scored at Burton-on-Trent against Derbyshire out of a total of 158. He also scored a second innings 50 as well as taking six wickets for Gentlemen v Players at Lord’s. His overall performances led to him being named as one of Wisden ‘s Five Cricketers of the Year in the 1950 Annual. Own Team O M R W Opp Ct Total Total 63.
