His early season form, he took twelve wickets in the MCC v Surrey match at Lord’s in May, earned him selection for the game between MCC and the touring New Zealand team at Lord’s. Five wickets in the New Zealand team’s innings helped win him a place in the England team for the Test Series. He played in all four Test Matches scoring 219 runs and taking 16 wickets. At Headingley in the first Test he took 6-118. At Lord’s, though he took no wickets, he scored 93 in a partnership of 189 with Denis Compton after England had lost five wickets for 112. 12
