His aggregate dropped from 1277 to 700 runs, admittedly in nine fewer innings, and he took nineteen fewer wickets at a higher cost than in 1947. He played on four occasions against the all conquering Australian team of 1948, scoring a dogged 66 not out against them for Cambridge University at Fenner’s. At Southend-on-Sea, Essex were on the wrong end of a fearful hammering by the Australian batsmen - 721 runs in 129 overs in a single day. Bailey’s figures were 2-128 in 21 overs. He took the wickets of Bill Brown and Keith Miller with consecutive deliveries although reports suggest that Miller made little attempt to stop the ball that bowled him. His other appearances against the Australians were for the Gentlemen of England at Lord’s and for the South of England at Hastings, fielding out to two more enormous Australian scores of 610-5d and 522-7d, although he did have the satisfaction of dismissing Don Bradman at Hastings. In the University match he scored 55 and 18 and took 5-110 as Cambridge lost by an innings. His only other five-wicket haul was for Cambridge University against Gloucestershire at Bristol.
