Famous Cricketers No 57 - W. M. Woodfull

FOREWORD by Bill Lawry AM He was one of Australia’s most famous and respected cricketers, both as a captain and opening batsman. I only met Bill Woodfull as a young State player when he was a State Selector and all the squad was in awe of this great player along with Bill Ponsford and Jack Ryder, who were famous names who selected the Victorian team. The records that Woodfull created at District, State and for Australia were outstanding and the quiet professional man had a great influence on the conduct and type of cricket played all around the world. For the modern player and spectator, Woodfull and Ponsford are just names in record books, but in reality they created a standard both on and off the field that few, if any, have matched and despite the pressure of the “Bodyline Series”, both recovered to be wonderful citizens in the community after cricket. Bill Woodfull was an inspiration when he played and a great role model in the real world. 3
