His aggregate of 2,426 was the highest he ever made in a season and his total of seven centuries also equalled his previous highest made in 1937. Additionally, he reached a score of fifty or more on thirteen occasions. Highlights of his summer included the making of two centuries in a match for the fourth time, being the first left-handed batsman to accomplish the feat, although B.Sutcliffe also achieved this target later in the season. He made the second and final double-century of his career when hitting 210 against Somerset at The Oval.
