Fishlock made an excellent start to the season. He carried his bat in Surrey’s first match against the tourists, and shortly afterwards went on to make his highest score in first-class cricket, also his first double century, in a splendid innings against Leicestershire. This earned him a place in the Test trial, which took place at Edgbaston in early June. He made top score of 35 for the Rest of England in a much interrupted game. This was not enough to gain him a place in the Test series, in which England were heavily defeated. Arguably, he might not have performed any worse than many other batsmen tried by the England selectors, and his fielding would certainly have been a bonus. Fishlock finished the season with over 2,000 runs. Surrey had a very good season and came second in the County Championship to Glamorgan, who won the title for the first time.
