The presence of the Australian tourists was a spur to Laurie Fishlock, who showed some good form in the early part of the season, batting particularly well in the second innings of Surrey’s first match against them. He gained a place in the Test Trial at Lord’s in early June, where he distinguished himself by hitting a not-out century. However, this was insufficient to gain him a place in the First Test and the inspired batting of other left-handers, Paynter and Leyland, helped to keep him out of the reckoning for the rest of the summer. He made over 2000 runs for the second time, although with only one not-out innings his average fell slightly. Own Team O M R W Opp Ct Total Total 121.
