He did not score more than 66 runs in any innings, until his twelfth game of the season when he was tried as opening batsman against Oxford University, when he hit a splendid century. He continued in this position for the rest of the summer, opening the innings, mainly with Andrew Sandham, then in his last season with Surrey.
