Milton was no longer captain. At 40 the Committee could be excused for looking for a longer-term leader. They were not to know that Milton would carry on playing for another six years. Milton took part in 22 matches scoring 1,059 runs at an average of 30.25, his lowest aggregate for some time. He scored two centuries against Somerset and Surrey.
