He played in all the county’s fixtures and made 1,646 runs at an average of 29.92, recording his highest aggregate of runs since 1959. At the age of 38 he had resumed as an opening batsman and, in this role, made two Championship hundreds, against Leicestershire and Nottinghamshire. In the first of these innings, at Bristol in July, he carried his bat through the innings for 138, adding 68 for the last wicket with Barrie Meyer. In this season a number of matches had a 65 41
