The 1964 Gloucestershire Year Book comments that his best innings were not made at the county ground. Indeed his ten innings there yielded only 133 runs with a highest score of 49. Milton admitted that he did not find the Bristol pitches easy to bat on and we should recall Fingleton’s comment after the 1958/59 tour about him not being used to good pitches. His highest score came at Stroud, 131 against Leicestershire and he made 102 in the return match with them at Leicester. A fine innings of 96 not out at Gloucester against Middlesex saved the side. He scorned the chance of a century by blocking out the last over as a maiden. A double of 85 and 72 not out helped materially to win the match against Lancashire at Old Trafford. He did not bowl at all in 1963 but his 32 catches testifies to his still excellent fielding. The Gillette Cup one day competition started in 1963, Gloucestershire being defeated in the first round by Middlesex at Bristol. Milton contributed 12 runs and took two catches.
