With the departure of Tom Graveney, Gloucestershire had a new amateur captain, Tom Pugh, and a new senior professional in Arthur Milton. Pugh was injured in the game with Northamptonshire at Peterborough in May so Milton found himself leading the side for the next seventeen matches five of which were won and six lost. As a batsman he played 52 innings this summer scoring 1,474 runs at an average of 30.70. His two hundreds were scored in the same match against Sussex at Eastbourne. At Peterborough he steered the side to victory in partnership with David Allen when, set 304 to win and lacking the injured Pugh, Gloucestershire were 137-5 when these two joined forces. He had a good double of 48 and 65 against Derbyshire at Gloucester, run out by Gloucestershire’s Harold Jarman fielding as substitute for Derbyshire as they sought victory on the last afternoon only to be deprived of a vital half hours’ play by a sudden rain shower. He bowled little, only eleven overs all season, and fielded as well as ever taking 47 catches including four in an innings against Warwickshire at Coventry. The 48th catch, (missed), off Ian Bedford of Middlesex has already been referred to in the biographical note. Milton’s benefit brought him the sum of £3,235 gross.
