He had played for M.C.C. against the tourists at Lord’s and made 104 in his only innings. Scores of 9, 14, and 3 in the Test matches, though, meant he was omitted for the Third Test and he did not appear for England again. This helped his county for whom he appeared 24 times in the Championship contributing 1,568 runs at an average of 39.20 as Gloucestershire made a determined bid for the top position, one that they had not occupied since 1877. They eventually finished as runners-up to Yorkshire and, for this, they were greatly indebted to Milton and his opening partner Martin Young who both made six centuries and rarely failed together in any of the county matches.
