His consistent displays for his county had aroused the interest of the selectors, still seeking an opening pair since the retirement of Len Hutton. Milton helped his cause by hitting 107 against Middlesex at Lord’s in June, his first century for two years. Selected for the Third Test against New Zealand at Headingley he made another, 104 not out, and he consolidated his position by scoring 101 in the Players v Gentlemen match at Lord’s, strangely his only appearance in this prestigious fixture. He played in the Fifth Test scoring 36. Test calls limited his Championship appearances to 21 and he made only one century for his county whilst his average dropped to 27.91. Overall he played in 29 matches scoring 1,431 runs at an average of 31.80. His fielding was up to its usual standard and he took 34 catches. He was named by Wisden as one of the Five Cricketers of the Year for 1958. By achieving selection as an international cricketer he became the latest and probably the last player to represent England at soccer and cricket. Own Team O M R W Opp Ct Total Total 256.
