Famous Cricketers No 55 - Arthur Milton
1957 Unable to play, because of an injured wrist, until 26th June Milton appeared in only 17 Championship games for Gloucestershire in 1957. His steadiness was greatly missed as the county slumped from third position in 1956 to twelfth in 1957. When he did play Milton contributed 758 runs at an average of 42.11 and, altogether, this season he made 943 at an average of 42.86. He did not score a century but he made 10 fifties including four against Nottinghamshire. As mentioned earlier, he liked Trent Bridge. In this season he reverted to the middle of the batting order as Emmett and Young had taken the opening positions in his absence in the early part of the season and the county needed to bolster a fragile lower order. He bowled very little, only nine overs all season for no wickets, but his fielding was as sharp as ever as he held 27 catches which included four in an innings for an England XI v Commonwealth XI at Hastings in September. He captained Gloucestershire, in Emmett’s absence, against Yorkshire at Scarborough. Typically he made top score - 84 not out. Own Team O M R W Opp Ct Total Total 237.
