He made three centuries, against Somerset at Taunton, Combined Services at Bristol and Nottinghamshire at Trent Bridge. As usual he played some of his best innings when the team was struggling: 56 out of 185 all out against Nottinghamshire at Gloucester, 51 out of 123 against Warwickshire at Bristol, and 59 out of 206 against Essex at Bristol. He did not bowl much this season, taking only two wickets, but his fielding was as sharp as ever and he held 36 catches including six against Middlesex at Lord’s and five against Worcestershire at Cheltenham.
