He played in 26 of Gloucestershire’s 28 Championship matches, missing the first two games of the Cheltenham Festival, and also played against both Universities and the West Indian Tourists. He made 824 runs at an average of 24.40 and took 16 catches. Perhaps the highlight of the season, though, was his only ever 5 wicket haul, against Glamorgan at Gloucester, when he took 5-64 in 27 overs the victims being D.E.Davies, A.J.Watkins, J.E.Pleass, B.L.Muncer and H.G.Davies. Wisden noted that “excellent in defence, he has still to develop”. He made four fifties including two splendid displays against Yorkshire at Bristol when he top scored in both innings. He batted three hours in the first innings for 59 to help save the follow on and for two and a half hours in the second for 77 not out, a stubborn eighth wicket stand with Goddard thwarting Yorkshire’s victory bid. For good measure he made 52 in the return game with Yorkshire at Hull. The other 50 was made at Colchester against Essex. To prove his worth in a crisis he made 33 not out against Derbyshire at Bristol out of an all out total of 104 and 27 out of an all out 82 against Warwickshire at Edgbaston.
