1981, when J.M.Wiener and J.K.Moss put on an unbroken partnership of 390 for Victoria against Western Australia. The Test match results proved successful with Australia winning the series 2-1, thus regaining the Ashes, McCabe’s contribution being 1 hundred and 3 fifties. His chanceless 137 in the Third Test came in 214 minutes with 22 fours. One of his best innings was 88 in the First Test, where Australia were pressing for quick runs, so to set England a target. McCabe struck 1 six and 15 fours, a total of 66 in boundaries, he took 14 off an over from T.B.Mitchell. During this innings he reached his 1000 runs for the tour in only 13 innings, which was two more than Bradman’s record of 11 by a tourist (Bradman was to reduce this to 9 in 1938). He finished the tour in style with a quick hundred in his only match against Kent, where Ponsford and McCabe put on 197 for the first wicket in 2½ hours and 124 in the Festival match at Scarborough, despite being missed twice; this innings contained 1 six and 18 fours.
