In the opening match of the season, on a poor Woolloongabba pitch, McCabe played a fantastic innings of 229 not out; he went to the wicket when New South Wales were 31 for 3, Bradman made 0 and Kippax was unable to bat after being hit in the face. He hit 1 six and 30 fours in 339 minutes, giving one chance at 103. This was his only double-century in Australia and he shared in two different hundred partnerships with Fingleton and Oldfield. The other memorable match was against Victoria, where he completed a century in each innings, the only time McCabe achieved this in his career. His 106 came in 156 minutes with 12 fours, and the 103 not out included 15 fours in an 89-minute stay. He was the seventh New South Wales player to accomplish this feat. Just to rub salt into the wounds of the Victorian players he took four wickets as well. In the Tests McCabe seemed to stay at the same level as in the 1930 and 1930/31 series, getting over fifty but not being able to convert them into hundreds, something that Bradman could always do. In McCabe’s 85th first-class innings since his debut he suffered his first duck; not only was it in a Test but a first-baller being caught behind off Bell! It was not to matter as Australia were far too strong for South Africa, winning the series 5-0, the second time Australia had done this, England in 1920/21 being the other opponents. 12
