Then Stewart Dempster, the captain and inspiration, was not available for several matches. He was employed by Sir Julien Cahn, and presumably other responsibilities intruded. The rot then set in ; not another match was won, and the County eventually finished fifteenth. Geary was captain in Dempster’s absence, but this came far too late in his career, and he was unable to lead by example. He did have his best ever season with the bat, averaging 36, but all three hundreds and both fifties had come before Dempster’s departure. His bowling started reasonably well, and there was one flash of the old George, when he took six for 77 at Edgbaston. Wisden states that “Geary’s all-round cricket stood out prominently in an interesting struggle”. Thereafter, wickets became more and more difficult to get. H.F.T.Buse of Somerset became the final victim of his career, lbw at Aylestone Road on 22nd July. He played on for another three weeks, bowling less and less, and finally bowed out after the Sussex match at Hove, finishing on 12th August. He was left out of the side for the remaining matches of the season. Own Team O M R W Opp Ct Total Total 529.
