The reasons were quite plain to see. Whilst the batsmen made runs a-plenty, the ageing attack had no penetration. Geary was now finding the going difficult, 68 wickets at 31 runs each for a whole season’s work was a dramatic decline. There were a few bright spots - ten wickets against Gloucestershire included his best analysis of six for 52 in the second innings, and there were three more five-wicket hauls. Ninety-one overs in the match at Northampton will have tested the stamina. But the writing was on the wall, at least as far as bowling was concerned. He could still make some belligerent runs when required. The best of his four fifties was 74 at Tunbridge Wells, and no doubt a few balls found their way into the rhododendrons! A.J.Holmes, of Sussex, was Geary’s 2000th victim, at Hove in July. Own Team O M R W Opp Ct Total Total 505.
