A major factor in their efforts was the revitalised forty-two year old Geary. He took 129 wickets in all matches, and was fifth in the national averages - fourth really, because “Gubby” Allen only took eleven wickets. There were many excellent performances - eleven for 40 off 33 overs against Sussex, another eleven against Hampshire, and ten scalps each from Worcestershire and Lancashire. In the last mentioned, following a cheeky declaration at 69 for 7, Geary took six for 34 in a rout of Lancashire for 73, giving Leicestershire victory by 129 runs. He was less successful as a batsman than in 1934, his average dropping to only 12. His highest score was 54 at Derby, when his rearguard action with Haydon Smith just averted an innings defeat.
