He played in two of the Tests, all three Players v. Gentlemen, and also for the Rest against the Champion County. At Southampton, he took seven wickets in each innings against Hampshire, but Leicestershire lost the match by three wickets in two days. Travelling immediately up to Ashby-de-la-Zouch, another fourteen Lancashire wickets were taken, this time the principal factor in a convincing Leicestershire victory. His second innings nine for 33 was the best performance of his career to date. He also scored exactly 100 at The Oval, putting on 150 for the eighth wicket with T.E.Sidwell.
