His finest performance was at Swansea in August when he scored 75 in his one innings and had match figures of 8-93 but this was a brief glimpse of the old Marshall and constitued more than 25% of his season’s total with bat and ball. At the end of the season he retired from county cricket with 826 wickets. For Hampshire, only Derek Shackleton has a better career average than Marshall’s 18.64 and he bowled on uncovered pitches.
