He returned to Hampshire who, strengthened by the acquisition of Gower, were reigning NatWest Champions. They started the season in impressive form but a disastrous performance against Essex at Bournemouth saw their Championship hopes disappear and they finished 15th. There was compensation for Marshall when he appeared in his first Lord’s final for the county and obtained a winners’ medal with the best bowling in the match. He failed to take 50 Championship wickets for the first time in a full season, but passed 1500 career wickets. He was a member of the Hampshire side which played the first Championship match at Arundel Castle. Own Team O M R W Opp Ct Total Total 348.
