Excluding his debut season (1979) Hampshire had never finished below 7th in seasons when Marshall played and never above 15th in the years he toured with West Indies. The season was dominated by batsmen but only Ian Bishop enjoyed a lower average for the season. The two met in a match at Portsmouth when Marshall gave a remarkable all-round performance. Batting at five he scored 32 and 60 and took 3-60 in Derbyshire’s first innings. They were set a target of 235 to win and raced to 140 before the second wicket fell but Marshall took seven wickets in 51 balls and Hampshire won by 48 runs. Marshall took 19 wickets in the Portsmouth ‘Week’ and scored two centuries in consecutive matches earlier in the season. He finished just 38 runs short of 1000 for the season.
