He then scored 72 as West Indies took a big lead but Gooch’s marvellous century saved the match. Six wickets again (ten in the match) helped West Indies to victory at Lord’s but Marshall’s astonishing performance was in the third Test at Old Trafford. England, trailing by 249, were dismissed for 93 with Marshall taking 7-22. These were his best figures in a Test career which was fast approaching 300 wickets. Marshall’s team-mate Robin Smith made his debut in the fourth Test but England lost again and the series ended 4-0 at The Oval. Marshall finished 13 wickets ahead of the nearest bowler on either side although, surprisingly, was only third in the averages on 12.65 – a measure of West Indies’ superiority. Marshall’s Hampshire colleagues appeared in their first Lord’s final, where his replacement Jefferies bowled them to victory over Derbyshire. Own Team O M R W Opp Ct Total Total 267.
