They contested the Championship until the last afternoon before Middlesex clinched the title. Marshall contributed significantly with bat (five fifties) and ball and was unlucky to fall just five wickets short of 100 for the season – mainly because it was a very wet summer. The county match at Taunton was particularly dramatic. Somerset recovered from 108-6 to 298 and reduced Hampshire to 107-7 before a county record partnership by Tremlett and James gave Hampshire the lead. Somerset declared, setting Hampshire 323 which they reached with Marshall 49* and James scoring 39 in 3.3 overs. Marshall clinched the victory by hitting Joel Garner for 6.
