He established himself in the Test side where Roberts, Holding and Croft took the new-ball but Marshall’s 15 wickets contributed to West Indies’ dominance over Botham’s side. Poor weather limited them to a single victory but they led on first innings in four of the five Tests. Hampshire were deprived of the services of Marshall and Greenidge for most of the season and finished bottom of the table for the first time since 1905. Both players appeared in a few matches from mid-August under the new captain Nick Pocock and Marshall did enough to finish top of the county’s bowling averages.
