Yorkshire led the table for most of the season but when Worcestershire entertained Sussex for the last match of the season they were only six points behind them.Yorkshire, however, won at Harrogate against Kent and Worcestershire were destroyed by John Snow and Tony Buss who had match figures of 9-88 and 9-86 respectively and had to be satisfied with the runners-up spot. Don added to his 67 Worcestershire centuries with 114 against Kent and 103 against Northamptonshire, both at New Road, and reached 1000 runs for the 18th time with 1,091. Once more Worcestershire reached the Gillette Cup Final at Lord’s after wins against Nottinghashire, Essex and Hampshire but were beaten by five wickets by Warwickshire to become bridesmaids in both competitions.
