Worcestershire were County Champions for the first time in their history and led in style by Don who ‘came good’ with three important centuries and 1,467 runs at an average of 30.56. During his testimonial year Don completed 1000 runs for the 16th consecutive season, still a Worcestershire record. The title was won when they beat Gloucestershire at New Road by an innings and two runs with three games to spare. They were given a confident start when Don (114) and Martin Horton (96) put on 187 for the first wicket to be followed by a partnership of 126 for the third wicket by Ron Headley (103*) and Tom Graveney (57). There was a nervous two hour wait after the victory had been achieved to hear that their only rivals for the title, Warwickshire, had lost at Southampton so the celebrations began. Don finished off the season with three fifties and two centuries in his last five matches including an important 53 not out, out of 108 in ninety-five minutes, in a low scoring match at Kidderminster where Middlesex were beaten by nine wickets. Early in the season Worcestershire were eliminated from the Gillette Cup in the first round at Newport. They were beaten by Glamorgan in the last over by one wicket after Don had scored 42, his career best in the competition. Own Team O M R W Opp Ct Total Total 542.
