Worcestershire’s fortunes, however, declined and they finished fourteenth, winning only four matches. Don scored just one century, 166 at Old Trafford against Lancashire where he enjoyed another big partnership with Headley when they added 163 for the third wicket with Headley scoring 108. A personal milestone was achieved when he became the first, and so far only, batsman to score 30,000 runs for Worcestershire during the second innings of the match with Middlesex at Worcester on 27 August, but his average and season’s aggregate were below par. This was the first season of the Gillette Cup and Don led Worcestershire to the Final at Lord’s after wins over Surrey, Glamorgan and Lancashire but the only bright spot in a 14-run defeat by Sussex was the naming of Norman Gifford (4-33) as Man of the Match.
