At Romford in late May Don was struck on the thumb by Trevor Bailey causing him to miss five matches, the first time in his career that injury had sidelined him. His second match back in June saw him captain Worcestershire for the first time when he led them at Taunton but it was almost two months after his injury before he showed any sign of a return to form with a fifty against Kent at Worcester in July. He was to miss another two matches through injury when he encountered Bailey again in the return match at New Road and a miserable season ended with 1,295 Worcestershire runs at an average of 31.58.
