Famous Cricketers No 51 - Don Kenyon
1957 Worcestershire had a bad start to the season losing to the West Indian tourists by an innings in two days but success came later in May at Bristol when Don scored his first century of the season , with 12 fours in two hours and forty minutes. The return game in July, chosen as his benefit match, was troubled by rain with only two hours play possible on the Saturday. He scored his fifth double-century, 200 not out in a total of 292-6 declared, hitting 32 fours against Nottinghamshire at Worcester. During this innings, when he was 154, he completed 20,000 runs for Worcestershire and at the age of 33 years and 50 days was the youngest to this milestone for the county until beaten by Graeme Hick in 1998. At Eastbourne on 1 July he scored 123, his 45th century, the most by a Worcestershire batsman, beating the 44 by ‘Doc’ Gibbons between 1927 and 1946. For the seventh time in eight seasons he completed 2000 first -class runs and here is an interesting quotation from the Worcestershire Yearbook for 1958 “one is forced to wonder whether the organisation of a benefit is good for a man’s cricket” - 2,231 runs, average 37.81 with six centuries in a rather rainy summer!
