He responded with 87, his highest Test score. Tom Graveney opened with him and they added 91 for the first wicket before Graveney was out for 42. Peter May was his next partner and they added 75 before Don was leg-before to Trevor Goddard having batted for just under four hours and hitting 10 fours. He kept his place for the Lord’s Test but was bowled by Neil Adcock for 1 in the first innings and in the second was leg-before to Goddard for 2. Despite these failures he kept his place for the Third Test at Old Trafford but it was to be his last appearance at this level. Peter Heine had him caught behind by John Waite in both innings for 5 and 1. Don finished the season with 2,296 runs, 1,884 of them for Worcestershire, ending with 108 at Worcester against Gloucestershire, 131 at Leicester and 103 not out at Bournemouth in consecutive matches. Against Hampshire he carried his bat, throughout the second innings, for the only time in his career, the last wicket to fall being Reg Perks on his last appearance after 27 years with the county. Perks had captained Worcestershire in 1955, the first professional to be appointed to that position. Own Team O M R W Opp Ct Total Total 267.
