1944/45 In India Simpson’s first-class career began in India in the winter of 1944/45 with two matches for a Services XI, one for the Europeans and one for Sind province. He scored 115 runs in three innings with a top score of 59. He made 29 which was his highest score in his first ten innings. His other scores were 2, 10, 3, 8, 3, 14, 6, 7 and 0 but at the end of the month, playing against Warwickshire, also at Trent Bridge he struck form with a brilliant 201. He followed this up with 74 against Nottinghamshire’s old enemy, Surrey, at Kennington Oval and, altogether, managed to make 592 runs that season in 26 innings at an average of 24.66.
