He played in only ten matches in the County Championship plus the match against the Pakistani touring team, and in these games he totalled 867 runs at 54.18, figures that put him at the top not only of the Nottinghamshire but also the national averages. Wisden comments that “his graceful stroke play revealed few signs of declining ability”. He made two centuries, his last in first-class cricket, against Somerset and Glamorgan, both at Trent Bridge. In five successive innings at Trent Bridge in August he hit scores of 105, 79*, 82*, 104* and 72. As well as the hundreds, he passed fifty on six occasions.
