He batted down the order, normally at number 4, and scored 1364 runs in the Championship at an average of 29.02 to finish in second place in the Nottinghamshire averages although some way behind Cyril Poole in both average and aggregate. He hit two centuries in consecutive matches at Trent Bridge at the end of June, both of them not out, against Sussex and Leicestershire. He hit eight fifties including an innings of 63 against the South African touring team at Trent Bridge. Nottinghamshire finished in last but one position in the Championship. As a bowler, Simpson took his first wicket for quite some time, that of G.J.Smith of Essex. In the match against Derbyshire at Trent Bridge in August he was no-balled for throwing by umpire Hugo Yarnold, ironically in what was effectively the last over of the match.
