Plagued by back trouble he was only able to appear for Nottinghamshire in ten matches between 5th June and 8th July. He made only 318 runs and his average fell to 15.90. He scored a century against Middlesex and played a fine innings of 78 against Somerset, both at Trent Bridge but there were 12 single figure innings amongst the twenty he played and the season must have been a miserable experience for him. 34
