With the retirement of Len Hutton, England were really searching high and low for opening batsmen but they didn’t turn their eyes towards Trent Bridge. At one time or another they tried six different opening batsmen including one, Tom Graveney, who was more at home in the middle order. In truth, Simpson did not have the sort of season that might have encouraged the selectors to pick him. Wisden comments that he was again below his best. He scored 1350 runs in the Championship at an average of 33.75 and 1541 in all matches at an average of 31.44. He made two centuries, against Surrey and Kent, both at Trent Bridge, but he made a number of useful half-centuries including a “double” of 82 and 67 against Leicestershire at Trent Bridge. How he must have loved batting on that ground. Nottinghamshire slipped down the table to eleventh spot but still won ten matches in one of our better summers. Own Team O M R W Opp Ct Total Total 306.
