He played in only one Test match against Australia, the first at Brisbane when England lost heavily. His own contrubution only amounted to two single figure scores although he was unlucky enough to be run out in the second innings. After this he lost the opener’s spot to Trevor Bailey, Bill Edrich and finally Tom Graveney over the rest of the Australian series. He won his place back in the Tests in New Zealand although he batted down the order in the first Test. He had two innings scoring 21 and 23 as England won both games handsomely. They were his last Test appearances. In the Australian State games Simpson hit a good hundred against Queensland and 74 against an Australian XI but they were his only scores over 40 and he finished a personally disappointing tour with a total of 644 runs at an average of 26.83. On the bowling front he took 2 wickets for five runs against Queensland, the only time he was asked to turn an arm over. 28
